BioInquiry Learning System 1.2: Making Connections in Biology
Nancy L. Pruitt (Colgate Univ.); Larry S. Underwood (Northern Virginia Community College); William Surver (Clemson Univ.)
*Varied Learning Styles. BioInquiry is a flexible project that provides multiple presentations allowing learners of different style and methods to grasp and comprehend the same material. The Integrated Learning System allows students to work with processes that they read about in the text. Students will still need to work hard, but this project offers them the ability to work in a medium that best matches their learning styles and the demands of the content. *Unique, Unintimidating Organization. The organization of this text is based on a discovery approach in which students explore the interrelationship of ideas. Chemistry is no longer front loaded in the text; rather, relevant chemistry is integrated to support concepts. *Student Motivation. The writing style and learning system is designed to be accessible and engaging for students so that they can see the relationship between the ideas presented. Students that class tested the material found it exciting to experience and work with relevant concepts that they read about in the text. *Expanded and Fully Developed Concepts. The authors have followed NSF recommendations focusing on developing concepts thoroughly as opposed to including every detail. Streamlining the content allows the students to spend more time focus in on and working with the major themes in Biology. *Integrated Learning System. From the project's inception, content has been matched to the best possible medium, and the media have been authored in a unique, integrative manner. The result is seamless and streamlined presentation. No correlation guides are needed as one tries to integrate multiple supplements as each component was authored with other media in mind.
