Movable Type Bible Desktop Edition |
| Rogers Cadenhead |
| Movable Type Bible, Desktop Edition will offer solid Movable Type coverage that moves beyond the default configuration into advanced areas such as template design, plugin use, plugin development, and database maintenance. The goal is to serve active Movable Type webloggers, Web publishers using it as a content management system, and server administrators who need to add a weblog community to their sites. Setting up a Movable Type system is a challenge -- even for experienced Web publishers -- because it requires Perl, several Perl modules, shell access, the ability to set up and run CGI programs, and a properly installed and configured database.
Once Movable Type has been installed, there are numerous ways in which it can be customized and extended. There are comments, trackbacks, categories, archives, and a sophisticated templating system that determines the Web site's design; the ability to publish photographs and other media; tools to import data, export data, and control the software as an XML-RPC Web service; and dozens of plugin scripts that extend its capabilities. Users can develop their own plugins as well using a standard interface.
