| It has become clearer which types of MMC systems are entering significant industrial use and what questions concerning their production and performance are of most pressing concern. In addition, intensive attention has been directed recently to metallic foams. These can offer attractive combinations of properties, including high specific stiffness and good energy-absorbing properties, particularly under compressive loading. For both, MMCs and metallic foams, there is intense interest in processing aspects, particularly in terms of cost minimisation consistent with retention of desirable microstructural features.
